Despite the wind and rain, Nanoose Community Services benefited from the ‘Thanks for Giving’ campaign appeal at the Red Gap centre on Saturday, Oct. 8.
Quality Foods customers stopped by the red tent to chat with NCS volunteers (names) and to learn about how they can donate money or their QF points to the local charity.
NCS depends on donations of money and points in order to distribute monthly grocery food cards to Nanoose residents who do not have enough to eat. This form of support replaces the traditional food bank model, known here as the Nanoose Community Cupboard. “People can use the cards to buy what they need, not what we happen to give them”, explains Food Program head, Jean Russell.
The congregation of St. Mary’s Anglican Church raised more than $1,400 in donations for NCS during its own Thanksgiving appeal that Sunday.
