Message from NCS Chair, Pam Bjornson:

I am delighted to announce that Art in the Garden will be returning this year: July 23,24 and 25. In addition to being one of NCS’s major fundraisers, this beloved event also signifies that we are finally getting back to normal.

NCS Chair Pam Bjornsen AGM Report

The NCS AGM was held May 18 via Zoom. Twenty-three members were in attendance as well as special guest Virginia Brucker, founder of Nanoose Community Cupboard, now Nanoose Community Services. It was lovely to have ‘Ginny’ participate in the meeting.

Topics reviewed at the meeting were the Elf Program, Forward House, Oceanside Building and Learning Together.  NCS also participated in the Revenue Canada Volunteer Income Tax Program. For information on these programs please go to: https://nanoosecommunityservices.org/

I am grateful for the great work of our Board members this past year, with special thanks to the Client Services Team, led by Marion Clark, who adapted all their procedures to make sure that both volunteers and clients would be safe.  In calendar year 2020, we provided food support to 68 households for a total of 115 people. We dispersed $104,550 in Quality Foods food cards. Those numbers remained stable from 2019.

NCS provided $3,000 to Nanoose Bay Elementary School to assist with field trips, lunches, and school supplies, and a special $3,000 donation to assist in the purchase of laptop computers to assist students in on-line learning.

Liz Holme presented the financial statements for 2020, highlighting that NCS is in an excellent financial position.  Our community has been incredible during this past year. Without any prompting from us, donations and Elf support increased substantially.  This support makes everything we do possible. In addition, Community Food Centres Canada provided special funding last year to organizations such as ours, which provided a buffer to the cancellation of almost all fundraising events.

A special thank you to St. Mary’s Anglican Church for the continued use of the church hall for our office and for meeting space.

NCS is grateful for the continued support of Quality Foods for our food program. We have also been able to continue our Pet Card program with Bosley’s due to donors who provide support specifically for that purpose.  Thrifty Foods has also assisted with their Smile card program.
